How to read case-study claims critically

Three questions separate rigorous case studies from marketing copy. First: is the comparison apples-to-apples? The valid comparison is same-period, same-product-page sessions where the only variable is whether the shopper completed a try-on. Comparing 'before widget launch' to 'after widget launch' confounds seasonal effects, traffic mix changes, and any other changes made at the same time. Second: is the metric clearly defined? 'Conversion rate' can mean add-to-cart, checkout initiation, or completed purchase — these can differ by 2–5x.

Third: who selected the merchants in the study? Vendors typically publish results from their best-performing cohort members, not a random sample. The numbers in a vendor case study represent achievable outcomes for a well-implemented deployment, not a guaranteed average. How to set your own measurement plan

Before deploying, record your baseline metrics for the product pages where you will enable the widget: conversion rate (completed purchases / sessions), add-to-cart rate, and return rate for the same period in the previous month and the same calendar period in the prior year. Define your measurement window (minimum 60 days recommended to accumulate enough try-on sessions) and your minimum detectable effect (typically 5% relative change is the minimum worth optimizing for).
