The History of Ghost Mannequin Photography: From Photoshop Layers to AI (1994–2026)

A ghost mannequin photo shows a garment as if an invisible person were wearing it: the body is filled out, and you can see into the neckline and the inside of the back. Zalando's image guidelines call it an invisible mannequin, and it is a common way to show the shape of clothing without a model.

This page traces how sellers have made that photo, from two shots combined in Photoshop to mannequins with removable parts, automated studios and AI. Every date links the page it comes from, and every source was read on 18 October 2026. For the companion story of shopper-facing try-on, see the history of virtual try-on.

1994: layers make the composite possible

The classic ghost mannequin photo is a composite. The garment is photographed on a mannequin, the inside of the back or the label is photographed separately, and the two are combined into one image with the mannequin removed. That way of working depends on layers, which Adobe added in Photoshop 3.0 in 1994 so that different elements of an image could be separated and edited independently (Adobe · checked 2026-10-18).

2000s: online fashion stores and the hand-made ghost

Online fashion stores such as ASOS, founded in 2000, and Zalando, founded in the autumn of 2008, show every item they sell in photos (ASOS plc · checked 2026-10-18; Zalando · checked 2026-10-18). For each one a shop chooses between a garment laid flat, a model, a visible mannequin or a ghost.

On 10 July 2008, Linda Bustos of the e-commerce blog Get Elastic asked how shops achieved the ghost look, where the body is filled out and you can see through the neckline while the mannequin stays invisible. She had argued in an earlier post that models and mannequins give shoppers a better idea of how a garment fits than a flat image does. The answers she collected show how the effect was made by hand (Get Elastic, archived copy · checked 2026-10-18):

  • Two shots, combined. John Gibbens of G2 Catalog Design shot two images and pieced them together.
  • A cut-down mannequin. His other method was an inexpensive plastic mannequin supported from below, with its neck cut down below the open neckline, and removable arms in different lengths for long and short sleeves.
  • No ready-made mannequin. Anna Yeaman, a product photographer, had tried plastic and wireframe mannequins two years earlier without good results, combined two images in Photoshop when she needed the label, and could not find a custom-made mannequin for the job.

The same post noted that Net-a-Porter showed both a flat photo and a mannequin photo of each item.

2010s to 2023: mannequins with removable parts and automated studios

The kit photographers improvised in 2008 later had commercial counterparts. StyleShoots, based in Haarlem, built all-in-one systems of software and hardware for fashion e-commerce photography; when Profoto bought it on 6 April 2022 for EUR 18 million, StyleShoots had 41 employees and EUR 9 million in sales for 2021 (Profoto · checked 2026-10-18).

On 25 February 2023 Profoto presented Magic Mannequin II, a lightweight foam mannequin made for e-commerce: pinnable, with removable necklines to reduce post-production and magnetically removable arms for consistent ghost mannequin packshots (Profoto, archived copy · checked 2026-10-18). A removable neckline lets the camera see the inside of the neck directly, which is the part the 2008 photographers had to shoot separately and combine.

2023 to 2026: AI ghost mannequins

AI tools now produce the effect from a single photo. Photoroom says you can upload a flat lay, a hanging garment, a mannequin or a model photo and its AI reconstructs the hidden parts of the garment (Photoroom · checked 2026-10-18). Photta's AI ghost mannequin tool takes a photo of the garment on a mannequin, on a hanger or laid flat and returns it worn by an invisible body, in 3D or as a flat lay, and accepts extra photos of the back, the inside and the shape the garment should keep (Photta · checked 2026-10-18).

What changed is the second shot: nobody has to photograph the inside of the neck and combine it by hand. What did not change is that the hidden parts have to be right. When an AI tool reconstructs a neck label or a contrast lining, check it against the garment, or photograph that part and give it to the tool. For the steps without Photoshop, see how to create the ghost mannequin effect without Photoshop.

What marketplaces ask for in 2026

Two marketplace rules show why the effect still matters. Amazon does not allow any part of a mannequin on a main image, whatever it looks like: clear, solid-colour, flesh-toned, framework or on a hanger (Amazon · checked 2026-10-18). Zalando rejects visible mannequins in mandatory packshots and model views, and for nightwear, underwear and beachwear, where it does not allow child models, it asks for packshots on an invisible mannequin or laid flat (Zalando · checked 2026-10-18). Three ways to make a ghost mannequin photo today

MethodWhat you photographWhat happens to the hidden parts
Two shots, combinedThe garment on a mannequin, then the inside of the back or the labelAn editor combines the photos in layers and removes the mannequin
Mannequin with removable partsOne shot, with the neckline or chest piece taken outThe camera sees them, so little editing is left
AI from one photoThe garment laid flat, on a hanger or on a mannequinThe AI reconstructs them; add photos of the inside or back when they matter

How we checked

We read every source on 18 October 2026, the two that are no longer online through the Internet Archive's copies. The oldest how-to we could date is the Get Elastic post of 10 July 2008. We found no reliable source for who first used the term "ghost mannequin", so this page does not name one.

Frequently asked questions

What is a ghost mannequin photo?

A product photo in which a garment looks as if an invisible person were wearing it: the body is filled out and you can see into the neckline. It is also called the invisible mannequin effect, the term Zalando's image guidelines use.

When did ghost mannequin photography start?

The composite method depends on layers, which Photoshop added in 1994. The oldest how-to we could date is from July 2008, when photographers described combining two shots, cutting down plastic mannequins and using removable arms.

Is a ghost mannequin the same as an invisible mannequin?

Yes. Both names describe the same effect: the garment keeps its shape and the mannequin is removed or never shown.

Do marketplaces allow visible mannequins?

Not on the main photos of the big ones. Amazon allows no part of a mannequin on a main image, and Zalando rejects visible mannequins in mandatory packshots and model views.

Can AI make a ghost mannequin photo?

Yes. Tools such as Photoroom and Photta make one from a single photo of a garment laid flat, on a hanger or on a mannequin. Check the reconstructed inside of the neck and the label, or give the tool a photo of them.
